Rutland has a lot of homes affordable to young
professionals and young families as well. “It made sense for us to buy a house in Rutland City. Houses are affordable here - we purchased a nice home at a fraction of what it would have cost us in other cities. My wife and I both work downtown, which is only a fifteen minute walk from our front porch. We live an urban lifestyle: we walk to work, to the grocery store, and are just down the street from all of the restaurants, downtown shops, and the Saturday Farmers’ Market. Most people don’t think this is achievable in Vermont, but we’ve found this lifestyle here in Rutland, and we love it,” said Tyler Richardson, Assistant Director for Rutland Economic Development Corporation.

Sara Gilbert, President of Rutland Young Professionals, hopes to see more downtown housing. There are several recently remodeled upper floor apartments downtown, and Castleton University just built brand new, energy efficient downtown housing for about 40 students.


Rutland is the kind of town where people are always getting together to support each other’s ideas and events. A lot of the best things to do are grassroots activities that have come out of some corner of the community. 

“I think the Rutland Young People mixes are an example. We usually get about 60 people together to do some
networking, enjoy each others’ company, and learn a little bit about the community. We were out at The Palms on Lake Bomoseen last month, which was absolutely
gorgeous, and included a tequila tasting presented by
local bar tender and writer Jim Sabataso,” says President of Rutland Young Professionals, Sara Gilbert.


Rutland does a good job at bringing its residents together at local venues for weekly entertainment and fun socializing.

Lyz Tomsuden, Marketing and Events Coordinator for the Downtown Rutland Partnership, says, “Sip ‘n Dips are
becoming really popular in Rutland. The Chaffee Art Center runs one at the mansion across from Main Street Park, and there are others popping up downtown as well. As a creative professional, these types of creative outlets are really
important - they are fun to do with friends, and they also provide some inspiration as well.”

“I never miss Tuesday night trivia at Center Street Alley – the competition is pretty fierce among the young pro teams,” says Nicole Densmore, Youth Sports Program
Director at Rutland Recreation Department.

Housing options for young adults are as varied as the imagination can conjure.Affordability is the key reason for this. Downtown rentals are available, single
family homes in historic and modern neighborhoods, condominiums.
There are no so-called high-rise apartment buildings. The historical median sales price for single family homes in Barre is $154,775; for Montpelier, it is $223,500.


Central Vermont’s Chamber of Commerce Bill Moore explains Montpelier’s
culture as “eclectic.” According to Moore, “There are museums,
galleries, theaters, farm markets, historic sites, inns, B&Bs and houses of worship all help to define who Central
Vermonters really are. A visit to The Inn at Montpelier can be transforming.”

Montpelier lays claim to being the nation’s smallest capital city. Montpelier is home to state government, colleges and insurance companies such as National Life Group and Vermont Mutual Insurance.


Central Vermont is central to Vermont’s tourism industry. Skiing, hiking, boating kayaking, camping or just passing through, you are never at a loss for activity in Central Vermont. Snowmobiling, hunting, biking, leaf-peeping or walking through one of the quaint, historic downtowns will never disappoint. 

Visit working farms and sugar houses like Bragg Farm Sugar House and Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks. Watch granite being transformed from a block to a beautiful sculpture by the skilled workers at Rock of Ages, Buttura Gherardi Granite Artisans, Granite Industries of Vermont or Hillside Stone Products. Enjoy casual or world-class elegance in dining. Central Vermont has it all.

Located in the Northeast Kingdom which is well known for its beautiful scenery and
mountain biking trails, St. Johnsbury is an up and coming town that offers many ideal spots to settle. The housing in St. Johnsbury is quite diverse. One has the option to live in the heart of the historical downtown area or in bit more
isolation within St. J’s woods. The city’s housing
density in the downtown area is ideal.
The community is walkable making it easy to visit friends,museums and shops, schools, or see a show! 


St. J is a laid back community with more cows than spotlights. Tara Holt, Director of Discover St. Johnsbury describes this relaxed
atmosphere, “Folks gather on neighborhood stoops, at a local swimming hole along one of the countless local rivers, or at the trailhead of any
number of great local hikes. 

St. J also stands out as an economically thriving community with great education and employment opportunities. It has the highest population in the Northeast Kingdom with students making up a significant amount of its residents.
The St. Johnsbury Academy is a secondary school of distinction, with students from around the country and globe.

The town's manufacturing sector is well and alive, making for many job opportunities
for Vermonters. 

Tara Holt says, “This thriving sector offers jobs across many skills and training levels, from entry level to senior
management. The commitment of local businesses to
community engagement is strong, with local business people serving on local non-profit boards and community groups.”


Its' location within The Northeast Kingdom makes
St. Johnsbury recreation top-notch. The area offers classic
Vermont activities such as hiking, skiing (Nordic and downhill), snowmobiling, swimming, and paddling. What sets it apart from other Vermont environments is the miles and miles of
incredible mountain biking.
